typocurious note 22

In honor of his birthday this month, Typocurious digs into the Lawson-Provan file of the American type designer-typographer-printer Frederic W. Goudy (8 March 1865–1 May 1947).

All posts this month are culled from the Spring 1969, Number 27 issue of Typographer’s Digest, edited by Alexander S. Lawson. Lawson’s introduction kicks off ‛Goudy Month’ followed by:

  • ‛Autobiographical Notes of a Type Designer’ by Frederic W. Goudy from an unpublished manuscript, written on 16 May 1941;
  • ‛Frederic W. Goudy: A Tribute’ by Richard Ellis, 28 February 1968;
  • ‛Frederic William Goudy: An Appreciation’ by Alexander S. Lawson;
  • ‛Types and Type Design,’ an excerpt from a speech given by Goudy at Syracuse University on 12 September 1936;
  • ‛The Goudy Method,’ an excerpt of a letter written by Goudy to Sol Hess Art Director of the Lanston Monotype Company, on 8 August 1944;
  • ‛Evening at Deepdene’ by Frederic W. Goudy; and finally . . .
  • ‛Taste,’ an excerpt from an address by delivered Frederic W. Goudy.

Eight individual posts in all for our entertainment & education are scheduled this month. [In other words, TypoCurious is taking the month off to enjoy his birthday too.] Happy 145th Birthday Fred!
